Cultuur is een moeilijk begrip. Veel mensen verstaan er verschillende zaken onder. Voor sommige mensen heeft het vooral te maken met kunst en muziek, andere mensen herkennen cultuur eerder in talen of in eetgewoontes in een land. De algemene consensus is dat cultuur een soort som van al deze verschillende aspecten is. Dus niet alleen wat voor kunst er uit een land komt of wat men iedere vrijdagavond eet, maar alle soorten cultuuruitingen die mensen in een bepaald gebied doen. Dus ook hoe ze zich in het openbaar gedragen, hoe ze zich kleden en welke sieraden ze wel of niet dragen.

Overal ter wereld

Sommige soorten sieraden, zoals zilveren sieraden, kom je in meerdere culturen tegen. We hebben het dan immers vooral over het materiaal van zulke sieraden, de vorm varieert natuurlijk per regio en per stijl. Een Tibetaanse armband kan bijvoorbeeld van zilver zijn, maar zal er heel anders uitzien dan een typisch Oostenrijks sieraad van hetzelfde materiaal. Misschien is de hele vorm van het pronkstuk anders, of ligt het meer in de details of in de materialen waarmee het zilver gecombineerd is. Hoe dan ook, net als de talen en andere cultuurelementen zijn ook de verschillen op sieraden vlak groot. Maar dat er overal sieraden of andersoortige versieringen bestaan, dat staat buiten kijf.

Edele metalen

Het is niet gek dat er op verschillende plekken dezelfde materialen worden gebruikt om sieraden te fabriceren. Edelmetalen, zoals zilver en goud, worden op de meeste plekken als kostbaar beschouwd. Dat is omdat ze erg hard zijn, ze er mooi uit zien en niet snel verslijten. Zulke materialen worden al gauw een statussymbool, omdat de voorraad ervan beperkt is en het daarom veel waard wordt. Een statussymbool moet je natuurlijk uitdragen, en dan wil je er ook mooi uit zien. De materialen worden daarom verwerkt in accessoires en sieraden, zodat de hele wereld kan zien dat jij deze zilveren sieraden kan betalen of dat iemand bereid is ze aan je te schenken. En dat ziet er overal ter wereld anders uit, maar het fenomeen komt wel in vrijwel alle culturen voor.

Als fashion statement

Tegenwoordig zijn dat soort nuances waarmee je je rijkdom of welvaart laat zien natuurlijk een beetje anders dan honderden jaren geleden. Je draagt niet langer alleen sieraden om te laten zien dat je dat kan betalen, maar ook juist om andere dingen uit te stralen. Misschien koop je helemaal geen heel dure dingen, maar wel precies de ringen en oorbellen die bij jouw unieke stijl passen. Daarmee straal je ook iets heel eigens uit waar mensen naar opkijken. En je kunt daar eindeloos mee variëren. De ene dag draag je alleen maar zilveren sieraden of bijvoorbeeld een grote grove ketting, de andere dag kies je voor een Tibetaanse armband, aangevuld met wat subtiele details. Het kan je hele outfit opfleuren en een tikkeltje bijzonderder maken, zonder dat je daar een geheel nieuwe garderobe voor hoeft aan te schaffen.
